AP: Christmas jeer: Kentucky governor’s ‘holiday tree’ angers critics

FRANKFORT, Kentucky — Gov. Steve Beshear has angered some Christians with his yuletide terminology.

A giant evergreen that will brighten the Capitol lawn this winter won’t be called a Christmas tree. Instead, the Beshear administration has dubbed it a “holiday tree.”

The Rev. Jeff Fugate, pastor of Clays Mill Baptist Church in Lexington, said Christians find the change troubling.

“If you call it a holiday tree,” Fugate asked, “which holiday are you talking about? We don’t put up a holiday tree for Easter or New Year’s or Thanksgiving. We put a tree up for Christmas.”

Beshear administration spokeswoman Cindy Lanham said the tree will be in celebration of a variety of winter holidays, including Christmas and Hanukkah…

  1. Dear Gov. Beshear,
The reason for a tree at this time of the year is to celebrate the birth of Jesus, CHRISTMAS, therefore the tree should be called a CHRISTMAS TREE. As a Christian I find renaming the State Christmas Tree as a the “holiday tree” unacceptable. Please reconsider your decision.

  2. Dear Gov. Beshear,
I am so frustrated with your “holiday tree” comment I really don’t know where to start as it opens a whole can of worms with me. I’ll tell you as I tell everyone else (and have so for years), it’s not Happy Holidays it is Merry Christmas. It is not a “holiday tree” it is a Christmas tree. A Christmas tree has always been and always will be a Christmas tree. I am very disappointed that you took the road of being politically correct. That is partially what is wrong in this country right now. People don’t speak the truth or what is on their mind as they have the fear of (heaven forbid) offending someone. You don’t say something to intentionally hurt someones feelings. But, if it is truth then so be it. We need more Christians and good hearted people to stand up to the politically correct politicians and make their voices heard. I am not the best Christian or person that I need to be and I have my faults. I believe in God, freedom and my country. I expect my elected officials to do the same. Anything less than that is unacceptable. If you want to be politically correct then go to California. I want hometown, down to earth, realistic representation that is not ashamed of God, freedom, my country or to tell people to work for what they want and not to expect something for nothing. Bill Gates gave a speech & here is 10 things that should be taught in every school to help get us back where we need to be in society: Rule 1: Life is not fair – get used to it!

Rule 2 : The world doesn’t care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3 : You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won’t be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4 : If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5 : Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6 : If you mess up, it’s not your parents’ fault, so don’t whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7 : Before you were born, your parents weren’t as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent’s generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8 : Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they’ll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn’t bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9 : Life is not divided into semesters. You don’t get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10 : Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Well, I guess now that I have voiced my unpolitically correct I have no future in politics………….or do I???

  3. Governor Bashear, please get your head out of your rear pocket. If you don’t like the terminology Christmas Tree, get used to it. You are in the minority along with the other confused anti-Chrisitian. Holiday tree indeed! No wonder this Country is in deep trouble. Get a life, Governor.

  5. The Xmas tree has nothing to do with Xmas as it was/is a pagan symbol.

However, by having an Xmas tree the ignorant governor now opens his state up to the expenses of either having a Menorah, Magen David, Wheel of Dharma, Pentagram, Omkar, Star & Crescent, Torii etc. etc. or facing expensive law suits by believers & non-believers who feel that the gov. should not be in the business of promoting one religion, or any for that matter, over another.

Just wait until some other religion, like Islam, becomes the dominant religion & they force the gov. to honor their religious symbols based on this governor’s precedent. See what a can-o-worms this turns out to be?
