The Scrooge Report Tracking…

Atheists spread ‘natural world’ cheer, and English school children’s nativity play bumped for Muslim holiday. TheScroogeReport follows these stories and more.

Anti-religion Sign Joins Nativity Scene, ‘Holiday Tree’ in Washington State Capitol

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — An atheist group has unveiled an anti-religion placard in the state Capitol, joining a Christian Nativity scene and “holiday tree” on display during December.

The atheists’ sign was installed Monday by Washington members of the Freedom From Religion Foundation, a national group based in Madison, Wis.

With a nod to the winter solstice — the year’s shortest day, occurring in late December — the placard reads, in part, “There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”

The foundation’s co-president, Dan Barker, said it was important for atheists to offer their viewpoint alongside the overtly religious Nativity scene and Christmas-style holiday tree.

“Our members want equal time,” Barker said. “Not to muscle, not to coerce, but just to have a place at the table.” more

School cancels Christmas nativity in favour of Muslim Eid celebrations

GREENWOOD, ENGLAND (Telegraph) — Greenwood Junior School sent out a letter to parents saying the three-day festival of Eid al-Adha, which takes place between December 8 and 11, meant that Muslim children would be off school.

That meant planning for the traditional nativity play were shelved because the school felt it would be too difficult to run both celebrations side by side.

The move has left parents furious.

Janette Lynch, whose seven-year-old son Keanu attends the school, in Sneinton, Nottingham, said: “The head has a whole year to plan for Eid and so she should be able to plan for both religious festivals.

“I have never heard of this at a school. It is the first year my son has been there and a lot of the mums like me were really looking forward to seeing the children in the nativity.”

She said a letter, sent from “The staff at Greenwood Junior School’, said: “It is with much regret that we have had to cancel this year’s Christmas performances. This is due to the Eid celebrations that take place next week and its effect on our performers.” more

  1. You know, a nativity scene is a purely-positive thing. The atheist sign is negative in nature, accusing religious folk of enslaving others.

For their sign to be equal to the Christian display, wouldn’t we have to have something like a poster of Christopher Dawkins being burned in hell or something? Just a thought …

  2. I totally agree with the last person who posted. The Christian folk haven’t posted up a sign saying, “All atheists are going to burn in hell”. Even if they do believe it they at least have the respect not to publicly display negative things about other people’s personal beliefs. Great blog and interesting post!
