Hinn, Dollar, White Among 6 Televangelists Under Senate Scrutiny for Alleged Donation Abuse

Senate Finance Committee to investigate alleged misuse of tax-exempt status to support extravagant lifestyles

From Christian News Headlines:

Breaking News: Republican Sen. Charles Grassley has launched an investigation into six televangelists for allegations of abusing their tax-exempt status. Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, Creflo Dollar, Eddie Long, Joyce Meyer and Paula White are required to submit financial records to the Senate Finance Committee by December 6th.

Congress has the authority to subpoena these televangelists. Some televangelists might be required to testify before Congress concerning their alleged use of tax-exempt donations to support extravagant lifestyles.

In 2005 the Trinity Foundation learned of Grassley’s work investigating financial abuses of nonprofits and contacted the senator about investigating various televangelists. After working together for two years, this investigation is becoming public and could lead to criminal charges, the tax-exempt status of various televangelists being revoked, and new legislation to reform religious broadcasting.

  1. @ kip…Have no idea why the spotlight on these…but these are biggies in the televangelist world in the stereotypical sense (there are plenty of good preachers that appear on TV that do not resemble these).

  2. One problem I have with all of this is that Ole Anthony is behind the scenes pulling the strings. Well, I used to be a member of Ole’s group, Trinity Foundation, and I can tell you that this is pretty much all a case of the pot calling the kettle black. My wife wrote a book about our time at Trinity Foundation and our painful separation from it entitled “I Can’t Hear God Anymore: Life in a Dallas Cult.”

  3. This is not surprising. However, it is disappointing. These greedy, materialistic “televangelists” give God a bad name. It is an honor and a privilege to minister the gospel. These folks have turned their backs on the anointed call of the Holy Spirit on their lives and turned God’s house into a den of thieves. The bible states that ministers will be held to a higher standard than the rest of us, so you can imagine the heap of trouble they’ll be in on judgement day. Instead of being greedy for ill gotten gains, they should have remembered that godliness with contentment is great gain. Of course, many of these TV preachers have only bothered to memorize the “prosperity” scriptures. Too bad they didn’t read the rest of it. Unfortunately, Jesus Christ will suffer another blow to His reputation among unbelievers because of these avaricious purveyors of lies. May God have mercy on them.

  4. here call them and tell them to repent and step down from the minstry paula white 1800-992-8892.benny hinn 1800-433-1900. eddie long 770-696-9600. joyce meyer .1800.727-9673. kenneth copeland .1800-600-7395. doller .1866-477-7683- 770-210-5700. thank you

  5. The supposed followers of Jesus have somehow been able to turn the Master’s message on its head. While Jesus stressed to give to the poor, the prosperity preachers have the poor giving to them, and that giving is in abundance. Jesus, the gospels claim had nowhere to lay his head, yet the prosperity folks live in unchained opulence. So much so, the stench of this hypocrisy has now come before the Congress of the United States. Under the guise of claiming prosperity for their flock, these contemporary Elmer Gantry’s have hoodwinked their followers with the slickest of promotions and entertainment. These chiselers also gain much of their monies by the selling of tapes and CD’s through their unabashed infomercials, teaming with the rest of the late-night infomercial hucksters. This garbage of spiritual self-help and wealth claiming propaganda videos and recordings are typically reworded and redone and sold again the very next year. They claim that their followers can find the same wealth by giving just a small amount, like a seed. Then this seed will grow into large tree of wealth. Unfortunately, the prosperity and wealth has only fallen to the likes of Paula White of the Without Walls International Church, Benny Hinn of World Healing Centre Church Inc., Joyce Meyer of Joyce Meyer Ministries, Kenneth and Gloria Copeland of Kenneth Copeland Ministries, and Creflo Dollar.

IIPeter 2.3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

  6. To those of you who love the Baby-Jesus, know the Crucified Lord, and receive the Resurrected Savior (smile) I offer these two reminders:
    1) Tell them not to speak evil things against anyone. Titus 3:2

    2) If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked (worldly) ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
    2 Chronicles 7:14

Remember Saints…. Be as wise as serpents, but as harmless as doves

  7. Prosperous Thoughts – Here is a fine experiment. Write to a prosperity preacher and ask him or her to tithe his or her personal income to you. The multi-millionaire will probably think, who are you to get such an income? You will have made the preacher think, however briefly.

  8. God is in control. If what they are doing is a sin against the poor then I pray for them to ask God to forgive them. I work with the poor and we can use the money for housing. These women came off of drugs and alcohol and now they are employed but they still need affordable housing and for them to have condos and Jets and things like that from the poor people giving them money based on the price of the word of God preached is pretty sad. We are so despearate for God and the person is so polished and going to show us our way to the King and that is not the way it has to go at all. If God is going to bless you then He is going to bless you and He can send a widow to your house and you do not have to buy this tape and that CD and go to this conference. These are all marketing and sales tactics that has made it into an industry or like an enterprise it is very commercial. The cameras are rolling and the people are performing and the people in the congregation are just proud to be a part of the media and sell their soul to say to their friends look at me and they buy these videos because the camera man put their face on it and then people get amazed that you saw the real Paula White celebrity and it is all ego. I have lived this when I went to church to see Paula White. I had no idea who Donnie McClurkin or Paul Morton were and they were all their and the women were all dressed fancy just to sit in the pew. We were all standing in line and the woman stated to the usher…But we have preferred seating. I thought I would go crazy if I did not say something. Since when do people have preferred seating in God’s house. I never heard anything so stupid in my entire life. I was humiliated and knew that the people on the line were their for vainglory and I went in because it was the house of the Lord, but I kept my eyes opened and I saw Paula White live in 2003 and now it is 2007 and she is still telling me that it is my season. My finance got worse…after she preached that word, I lost my job and was unemployed for 9 months and now it is my season again…and I just want God to keep me employed. I hear reposition myself and do this or that…these words are not telling me anyting. I told God speak straight sentences to me. I cannot understand the bow and he is shooting me and aiming me at a target. For what? Am I to believe that he is aiming me to become a preacher of prosperity? They use vain babblings. I keep hearing it or watching them 3 times and then I said to myself you still do not know where you are going with your repositioned self. Where will you end up with that? I keep asking God what are my gifts which you guys can guess…it is writing and speaking, but these teachers would never guess that their so-called godly wisdom would be used agaisnt them. God would then give their enemies the spotlight to speak against them and get people back to true worship and doctrine.

  9. Why is Steve Schultz (popular Elijah List) urging people to make their end of year purchases from Elijah List for tax purposes? Isn’t this marketing the gospel? This is not the gospel Jesus preached. How sad. How strong the delusion.

  10. Kenneth Copeland put on a excellent performance at his latest ministers conference held on January 22,2008 visible at http://www.wittenburgdoor.com/copelandclips , which has now gotten the attention of people all across the USA, and abroad. The message he was unmistakably sending, came across loud and clear on every subject he was addressing. From voicing his personal feelings about the senate investigation, to a multitude of other issues facing KCM today. Surprisingly, Kenneth does admit to some element of truth in the letter KCM received from the Senate, but did not go into any detailed explanations. Also in his defense, he makes the accusation that the truth is being twisted a bit. A old saying comes to mind , what comes around goes around. Years of promoting the promises of prosperity, physical healing, and last but not least the twisting of biblical scripture for personal gain has returned to KCM full circle.
“ I had a home“, “I had a life“, “I had faith“, “I had a family“, “I lost a loved one“, these are merely a handful of endless testimonies coming to light nationwide. Ranging from all walks of life, their heartbreaking testimonies can be found throughout the web, yet inconceivably, victims are being labeled as fools, ignorant, and basically downright blind for not seeing the truth behind the Prosperity Gospels falsehoods. Being only human, our quest for health and wealth, regrettably does lead some in the wrong direction. Promises and guaranties, made by the Prosperity Gospel ministers, give people that have not obtained these blessings on their own, a second chance at achieving their goals in life. An important discovery I made while reviewing testimonies, revealed the fact numerous victims had very little knowledge of the Prosperity Gospels dark side. These unfortunate victims, appear to be equipped with only a small portion of the web of deceit these ministers weave . For example, picture yourself being raised in a small country town, with a population of only a few hundred, the closest city, only a population of only a few thousand. Computers, internet, cable, satellite TV, and other high tech gadgets are not needed or desired. This was my life, before KCM.
Prosperity Gospel ministers enter the homes of many victims though a thirty minute Sunday morning worship service on a local broadcast station. Myself, growing up in Jigger La., truly located in the middle of nowhere, I can testify to the fact that we only received on a clear day about three or four channels at most. Therefore warnings of the numerous dangers, and intentional deceit, associated with Prosperity Gospel ministries, being made by critics, ministers, and victims went unheard by many. The irony of this are the many warning labels we all encounter every day. From cleaning supplies to over the counter medications, labels posted on various products warn us of the dangers associated with that particular product. Regrettably Prosperity Gospel does not offer this, but should! Family’s have lost their homes, lifesavings, and some even their lives to the Prosperity Gospel.
Unfortunately my mother was not one of the lucky ones, her confidence, and faith in this false Gospel, ultimately cost her, her life. After more than a decade of programming her mind to believe and think the Prosperity Gospel way of life, she lost her battle with cancer. By refusing medical attention, she sealed her fate, but the programming she had acquired from Kenneth and Gloria Copeland proved strong all the way to her last breath. A diary she left behind revealed the horrific tale of her life from 1992-2002, the top of each page titled with Kenneth Copeland, Gloria Copeland, or BVOV. Some mistakes in life we can not undo, and good intentions don’t always go as planed, these victims are simply following misleading promises of health and wealth. Their use of miraculous healing confessions, and newly found wealth testimonies, are their sales pitch, my mother among others, are proof that their sale pitch does work. The possibility of certain Mega churches misusing contributors finances for their own personal luxuries is ultimately what brought this scam to the publics attention, not the loss of life, the financially bankrupt, nor the numerous homeless victims that have been left in the wake of this devastating hoax.
Knowledge, is the only discovery I found to be effective in this seemingly endless battle. Sadly for some our efforts will go unheard. As for my family, once again I am addressing another envelope to Kenneth Copeland Ministries, asking once again for a summery of my mothers (Bonnie Parker) contributions to KCM, and since they have bankrupt our family also due to the numerous expenses we encountered before and after mom’s death, and once more, ask them to purchase a headstone for mom. I believe they at least owe her that much.

  11. The I.R.S. issues Non-Profit Status and should be the ones who investigate this type of alleged offense not some headline grabbing Congressman or his an a religious group who have a vested interest in the outcome. The seperation of Church and State has been declared absolute bythe U.S. Supreme Court every time issues like this have come before it.

  12. Why on earth would anyone send these charlatans money in the first place? They are transparently greedy, manipulative and theologically suspect.

Local congregations are struggling financially while these people are obviously living high off the hog.

Who will visit your mother in the nursing home – Paula White? Kenneth Copeland? Benny Hinn? No. The minister or visitation team of the local congregation will. Who will perform your pre-marriage counseling and your wedding ceremony? Who will conduct the funeral of a teenager killed in a car crash and console the grieving family? Who will prepare and baptize new Christians? Who will preach the gospel in your community? Who will provide free space for AA and Brownie meetings? Who will provide a caring Christian community where children can safely learn God’s word?

Who? The local congregation, its ministers and its members. Not those skimming the cream from the pocketbooks of the gullible.

One can only hope that investigations like this one will alert people to the financial abuse they are being subjected to and encourage them to attend a local church where their gifts of money, time and talent will be well used and valued. (And where you get to vote on the annual budget and how it’s used!)
