Iraq is a different universe. It’s far away. In the news it’s mainly numbers:
How many deployed? How many dead?
But once in a while, you are touched…and discover
Iraq is all to everyone. You see your child, your home, your pain, your anguish…
You look in her eyes…and discover
Iraqi girl looking at her shelled home
her youth, her home, her pain, her anguish…And a child isn’t that far away
for you to cry
and be mad,
and be sad,
that in Iraq, in her home, with her pain,
Iraqi girl should not have to endure
as she did…looking
not as a child anywhere.
(Photo/Source: AFP) Aug. 14, 2007 — An Iraqi girl looks through the damaged door of her house following an early coalition forces raid in the predominantly Shiite Baghdad suburb of Sadr City. At least 175 people were slaughtered on Tuesday and more than 200 wounded when four suicide truck bombs targeted people from an ancient religious sect in northern Iraq, officials said.
