CHICAGO – A police officer accused in the beating of a bartender is facing new charges after prosecutors said he threatened to plant drugs on bar employees and arrest customers for drunken driving to keep a videotape of the attack secret.
Prosecutors announced 14 additional felony counts Friday against Anthony Abbate, a 12-year department veteran whose alleged beating of the female bartender captured attention around the world after the videotape was released to the media.
The charges include seven counts of official misconduct, one count of communicating with a witness, three counts of intimidation and three counts of conspiracy, according to Thursday’s indictment.
